The Hawaiʻi Workers Center’s Annual Workers Victory Celebration
Despite the many challenges this year, we still have a lot to celebrate as we returned to our roots: organizing low-wage non-union workers to exercise their political, social, and cultural rights. Through our community organizing trainings, we reached over 100 workers, students, and allies. This work led to the formation of the COFA Workers Alliance – which includes the new Chuukese workers’ organization Angang Fengen – as well as the launch of the Filipino Farmers & Farmworkers Association of Waialua following the Kona Low storms earlier this year. We also launched a successful Youth Organizer Internship program with COFA, Filipino, and Native Hawaiian youth, and established new partnerships with the University of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi Occupational Safety and Health (HIOSH) to reach more directly impacted workers.
The annual Workers Victory Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on workers victories throughout the year and celebrate how far we’ve come in advancing and defending workers rights here in Hawaiʻi. As attacks on workers continue to escalate, it’s crucial that we uplift those standing up to injustice — and rise up and fight for workers rights until all workers are empowered to organize.
