Media Advisory: Hawaiʻi Workers Center to Hold Town Hall Meeting to End the Tip Penalty on Workers

MEDIA ADVISORY

March 1, 2023

HAWAI‘I WORKERS CENTER TO HOLD TOWN HALL MEETING TO END THE TIP PENALTY ON WORKERS

WHAT: Community town hall meeting to discuss the impact of the tip penalty on workers and efforts to eliminate it here in Hawai‘i and on the continent.

WHO: Open to the public. Tipped workers, elected officials, and community advocates will share their thoughts on the tip penalty.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 8

TIME: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: Towers of Kuhio Park

1475 Linapuni St., Ste. 111

Honolulu, HI 96819

WHY: The Hawai‘i Workers Center believes that all workers are entitled to the protections of the full minimum wage. Tipped workers currently receive a sub-minimum wage as employers are allowed to deduct from workers’ wages using the tip penalty/credit. The Hawai‘i Workers Center focuses on organizing workers until Hawai‘i joins the seven other states and more recently, the District of Columbia, that pay the full minimum wage plus tips.
